NP Winter Amp Day 5

Day 5: Tuesday, Jan 7

Namobuddha hike, Village, and Sanskriti farm tour

By Tiberias Okanga

The day began with a chilly morning at the Fulbari Homestay aka Sanskriti Farm in Sunuwar Village. Our night at the newly constructed guest house on the Fulbari Homestay farm was delightful, offering comfort and warmth amidst the serene surroundings. As the morning unfolded, we experienced a mild earthquake. Fortunately, no casualties were reported in the locality.

After enjoying a hearty breakfast graciously prepared by our hosts, Shree and Rupa, we set off for the Thrangu Tashi Yangste Monastery in Namobuddha municipality. The journey took us on a scenic hike through the hills, lasting about an hour and a half, as we ascended to an altitude of approximately 1,900 meters above sea level. The relatively clear weather offered breathtaking views of the Himalayan peaks: Langtang Lirung, Dorje Lakpa, Sisapangma, Jugal, and Bhairab Takura. At the Thrangu Monastery, we attended a Puja ceremony, immersing ourselves in Buddhist history, culture, and spirituality. We explored various viewpoints and spots around the temple before descending through the beautiful villages in Namobuddha Municipality to return to the farm.

After lunch, we toured the farm with our host, Shree, who shared insights into their innovative projects. These include house modifications using locally available materials for modern designs, locally producing biochar for soil enhancement, and a locally designed oven for baking. The farm focuses on organic food production, preparing compost from cow waste, biochar, and using dried shredded plant waste to grow a variety of fruits and vegetables.

Other initiatives include beekeeping, water harvesting from a constructed irrigation pond, biogas production from cow and human waste for cooking, and a solar cooker that is especially useful in summer. The farm exemplifies and promotes sustainable practices and resourcefulness.

Our day ended with a barbecue at the farm.
