Objective 4: Experiential Education and Outreach

We train the next generation of worldly, technically skilled, mature collaborators at the FEW nexus.

We always remember our mission as university-affiliated educators: to provide rigorous coursework and vivid field-based experiences for our students. We reach undergraduates, graduates, and postdocs across the four global regions that house our universities: The University of Maryland (USA); Hebrew University (Israel); Kathmandu University (Nepal); and Mbeya University of Science and Technology (Tanzania).

Built into our project designs are experiential education opportunities for our students. These include study abroad exchanges, international internships, and online global courses in which students from different continents and contexts work together on common FEW nexus challenges.

Our final objective translates the knowledge and experience generated through Objectives 1, 2, and 3 into high-quality experiential education and outreach programs. We teach, train and inspire a new generation of change-makers at the food-energy-water-climate-health nexus.

For example, our Global STEWARDS amp trips take USA-based students on experiential journeys into the FEW nexus in Nepal. While students enjoy life-changing cultural immersion, conversations, and mountain vistas, they also contribute scientific and technical skills to carry out water quality research on the ground. This research then informs actions to be taken to improve public health and climate resiliency in the local community. This interdisciplinary work amplifies the cultural, communication, technical, and theoretical knowledge of our students.
